Congress and President Bush apparently believe they have shown extraordinary courage and willingness to “err on the side of life” in the Schiavo case. I trust that they will act with the same decisiveness and speed in proposing tough gun control measures. The exercise in ignoring the wishes of a spouse and bulldozing state legal proceedings reveals more of the administration’s doublespeak on issues — marriage and state’s rights among them in this instance. But then again, perhaps Congress’ newfound courage will extend to telling the NRA to sit down and shut up. Surely some of the families grieving their loved ones mowed down in Bemidji, Minn., would appreciate action that went beyond lip service and partisan politics. I know I would.
